The pop star’s fun and frenzied A Nonsense Christmas just raised the bar for seasonal holiday specials.
Sabrina Carpenter has already had a standout 2024. Her single “Espresso” was one of the biggest songs of the year, and her sixth studio album, Short ’n Sweet, helped catapult her into a new level of pop stardom. (An opening gig on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour didn’t hurt either.) Nobody would fault her if she wanted to end the year by, say, taking a nice tropical vacation. But instead, she’s wrapping up 2024 with a new effort: a holiday special on Netflix titled A Nonsense Christmas With Sabrina Carpenter. Inspired by the variety shows of yesteryear, it makes a strong case for Carpenter as a new Christmas pop-music mainstay.
The hourlong special, which Carpenter herself described as “so, so random” at a special preview screening in New York City on Thursday, was filmed in front of a live audience in only two days. The energy is fun and frenzied: There’s tinsel and trees and espresso martinis, plus glamorous performance vignettes featuring the star and a few of her very famous friends.
